Verizon, the communications conglomerate, and the Communications Workers of America in conjunction with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers announced that 45,000 unionized workers have walked off the job today as contract talks stalled. The contracts had expired at midnight, Saturday, August 6th.
Operating in the format of certain Wisconsin, Ohio, and other state's officials, the union representatives indicated that Verizon is demanding rollbacks of wages, benefits and union rules while posting annual profits of up to $6 billion.
Evidently, the loss of 45,000 skilled workers does not mean much to Verizon, as spokesperson Peter Thonis said, "customers should expect "no major impact" from the walkout. Repair calls may take longer, but "nothing detrimental." Nothing detrimental? What is this foolish person talking about?
A simple answer to this continuing dilemma might be for 45,000 Verizon customers to switch their communication services. Or threaten to if these union workers are not given a fair shake during labor negotiations. A perfectly good source for starting petitions, and shaking the tree of these greedy corporations of all sorts may be found at change.org. Perhaps Mr. Thonis might re-think the definition of detrimental if 250,000 people signed a petition demanding fair treatment for workers.
And the same to you, Governor Walker........
